Tai Chi Movement Design and Video Production Support: Ming Baï Lab
TV Taiji brings Tai Chi hand movements into a kinetic relationship with wind and water. Two floating platforms carry grille LED screens showing gestures of pushing, pulling, and circling. Programmed underwater thrusters coordinate the platforms' movement with the gestures on screen, while wind and water currents continually alter their paths.
The screens carry moving images while physically moving in response to them. This interaction between programmed mechanics and natural environmental forces creates a continuous exchange between the two platforms, extending the recorded gestures into the surrounding water.
Movement Design and Video Production Collaboration:
Developed in collaboration with Ming Baï Lab, the video production and choreography center on five looping sequences based on Tai Chi gestures. During filming, the speed, direction, and intensity of the movements were calibrated to make changes in muscular tension legible on screen, with the physical motion of the platforms in mind. A programmed control system then synchronized each sequence with the underwater thrusters.
